The Acromio-Clavicular Joint overlies the shoulder joint and is an important connection between the upper limb and the axial skeleton ( The Spine) though which load transmission occur .
Injuries to the acromio-clavicular joint include distal clavicle fracture and subluxations which may occur due to fall on the tip of the shoulder.
Symptoms
- Pain and swelling over the tip of the shoulder
- Difficulty in shoulder movement
- Prominence of the collarbone
- Drooping of the shoulder
The initial home treatment should be with R.I.C.E protocol and sling application . Consult a shoulder surgeon for these complicated injuries as untreated they can lead to arthritis of the acromioclavicular joint , weakness and drooping of the shoulder.
Treatment
Definitive treatment is non operative for grade I & II injuries . In grade III injuries and above surgical treatment is indicated for optimal outcome.
Surgical treatment consists of Arthroscopic repair with suspensory device which allows the benefit of cosmesis and early return of function.
Chronic injuries need arthroscopic reconstruction the acromioclavicualr joint with tendon graft harvested from the knee joint.
