Posterior Instability
What is the Labrum?
The labrum is a cartilaginous structure that surrounds the glenoid (The Socket) of the shoulder ; it increases the depth and helps in stabilising the shoulder joint.
Cause of posterior instability:
- Single episode injury
- Fall and posterior shoulder dislocation
- Epileptic seizure and posterior shoulder dislocation.
Symptoms :
- Pain in the shoulder
- The shoulder movements are preserved despite the dislocation
- Multiple / Repetitive microtrauma:
This can happen in weightlifters or overhead athletes .
Treatment :
Acute injuries are managed with reduction of the dislocation and recommended protocols.
Physical therapy can help in pain control and improvement of function
Long term treatment :
Surgical treatment is in form of arthroscopic repair of the torn labrum.
Generally in chronic/ microinstablity, the labral tear can be associated with a cyst which may be causing nerve compression. The cyst can also be decompressed during the same procedure.
