    ACL Tear Treatment

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an important ligament in the knees which plays an important role in keeping the joint of the knees stable and preventing excessive movement. When the ACL is torn, it causes severe pain and a lack of stability while walking and doing other activities. In such cases, ACL surgery is required to treat or reconstruct the affected ligament and is the only way out of extreme pain and discomfort.

ACL surgery is an optimum choice for those who have completely torn ACLs and are highly engaged in sports or other activities.

It is also a suitable option for those with a partial tear but suffering from severe pain and instability. The primary motive for getting ACL surgery is to repair the damaged ligament to restore the normal functioning of the knees.

The surgery is usually performed with the help of arthroscopy. It involves minimum invasion techniques hence small incisions and a camera to get a complete view of the situation inside the knee. The surgery takes about two hours to complete, and the patients can go home on the same day. After the surgery, patients are given braces and crutches to use for several weeks to reduce the pressure on the knee, allowing it to heal completely. Physical therapy is needed to regain strength and mobility in the operated knee.

Thus, ACL surgery is a good option for the treatment of those patients who are suffering from a damaged ACL ligament or have a completely broken ACL ligament. The surgery would help them restore their high-intensity activities such as sports, etc. It helps reduce the pain and discomfort from the broken ligament while ensuring returning to all activities. Also, ensure that you are going for the surgical procedure only after all non-surgical procedures and treatments have been tried and did not deliver successful results. To get a complete idea of whether you should undergo the procedure, it is best to consult an orthopaedic surgeon who would assess your situation and suggest it accordingly.

Dr. Aditya Sai is a gemstone. My father-in-law had a tendon injury while climbing stairs in my hometown, Odisha, and the doctor there made us nervous like anything; he asked us to rush to Bhubaneswar or Visakhapatnam immediately and get the surgery done within 7 days. Thank God, I live in Mumbai and learned about Dr. Aditya Sai through a mutual friend, and I took an appointment. Next morning, my father-in-law flew from Odisha to Mumbai, and we met Dr. Aditya Sai. Believe me, he made us so comfortable, and first he made us understand the exact situation, the need for an MRI, and in what scenarios surgery is required, etc. After all the diagnoses, he prescribed special footwear for my father-in-law for 6 weeks. Today, as I write this post, without surgery, my father-in-law is absolutely perfect and is about to go to the physiotherapists for recovery. Thank you, Dr. Aditya Sai. 🙏

    Frequently Asked Questions

There are four vital ligaments in the knee joint. One of those important ligaments is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL, which prevents the tibia from sliding in front of the femur and maintains the rotational stability of the knee.

One of the most common injuries faced by athletes is ACL tear (especially in sports like football, basketball, skiing, gymnastics and track and field events) due to constant running, jumping and landing. Females have up to a ten times higher tendency to experience ACL than males in the same circumstances. ACL tears can range from mild (partial rupture of ACL) to severe (complete ACL rupture).

ACL or Anterior Cruciate Ligament is a strong ligament that connects the femur to the tibia, i.e. thigh bone to shin bone, and when this ligament is ruptured, it results in an ACL tear. Around 75% of cases of ACL tear are with either minimal or no contact during the injury. Still, surgery is often the only solution because the ACL can’t grow by itself once torn and ignoring it can develop additional knee injuries. ACL arthroscopic surgery cost in India can be very high. You may consider Dr Aditya Sai for the best treatment at affordable prices.

The tissues connecting two bones are called ligaments. There are two ligaments in the middle of your knee, one of which is the ACL. It connects the thigh bone or femur to the shin bone or tibia and helps the knee withstanding rotational forces.

ACL tear is common in sports because of the sudden movements which can collapse the knee. There can be various causes of an ACL tear, like,

    • Not landing properly after a jump.
    • Any sudden movements like running, jumping or changing directions while running at high speeds also called cutting.
    • A direct collision with the knee, especially from a tackle.
    • There is not enough knee protection in a car, and in case of a head-on collision, the knee can suffer severe damage, including ACL tear.
    • The ACL can get weaker with age, like any other part of the body.

Any of these causes can result in a mild to a severe ACL tear. So it is advised to visit a doctor if you encounter an injury in the knee.

    Risk Factors:

Although anyone can suffer an ACL tear or any other ACL injury, certain people are more at risk than others.

    • Female athletes and other women are up to ten times more at risk than their male counterparts. It may be because of the strength and conditioning of the muscles, anatomy or hormonal differences.
    • Athletes from certain sports are more likely to endure ACL tears, including football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and skiing.
    • Using faulty sporting and protective equipment.
    • The ACL can get weaker with age. So people of ages around 40 are more prone to ACL injuries.

These risk factors need not affect you because you fall into one of the risks mentioned above. So it is better to talk to a doctor or visit Dr Aditya Sai at Shoulder And Knee Clinic.

People who have suffered ACL tears before know when they have had an injury. But here are a few symptoms:

    • Pain: Depending upon the extent of the tear, you may feel mild to excruciating pain in the knee. Your knee might be sore for a few days if the ligament has not torn apart. Due to this, you may find it difficult to put pressure on the affected leg.
    • Swelling: During the first few hours, there may be swelling around the knee area. But you can eradicate this swelling by applying ice or even raising the leg around the body level.
    • Trouble walking: People find it difficult to put pressure on the affected leg because of the pain. That’s why it is tough to walk correctly.
    • Restricted motion: The torn ligament and the resulting pain can lead to restricted movement.

That’s why the leading orthopaedics, including Dr Aditya Sai (widely recommended for having the best ACL reconstruction surgery in India), advise consulting a specialist as soon as you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

As with any injury, it is imperative how you attend to it. That is why, for home-care, the RICE model is advised and implemented:

    • Rest: To ensure that you’re not putting too much pressure on the affected knee, taking rest is imperative.
    • Ice: There may be swelling during the first few hours of the injury. To reduce this swelling and alleviate the pain, you must apply ice around the knee.
    • Compression: A crepe bandage or compression band should be wrapped around the knee to hold the tissues in place and reduce the motion.
    • Elevation: The knee has to be elevated by support to reduce the pressure on it.

Following this RICE model can alleviate your pain and give you momentary relief.

    Rehabilitation

If you have suffered from a minor ACL injury, you may not need surgery, which might relieve you of ACL tear treatment cost in India. In case of a minor injury, your doctor may advise you to undergo rehabilitative therapy with a physiotherapist. You will have to use crutches for movement and wrap crepe bandages around your knees.

The primary goal of rehabilitative therapy is to reduce swelling, alleviate the pain and reinforce the affected muscles.

    Surgery

ACL reconstruction cost in India can be very high, but surgery is often the only solution because the ACL can’t heal by itself once torn. The doctors only suggest surgery if:

    • The ACL tear is severe, and more than one ligaments have ruptured.
    • You are having problems in your everyday activities (heavy activities).
    • You are an active athlete playing high-intensity sports.

During an ACL reconstruction surgery, the doctor assesses the extent of injury by making small incisions. The damaged ligament tissues are entirely removed and replaced with tendons from other parts of your body (often hamstring tendons). After the surgery, the rehabilitation therapy is resumed to ensure that the patient’s full range of motions, stability and strength is fully restored.

Indian doctors are recognised to be among the very best when it comes to ACL surgery. Over 5 million ACL surgeries have been performed in the country. Although ACL operation cost in India is very high for an average citizen, it is still affordable compared to other countries. To know more about ACL tear injury cost in India, contact us at Shoulder And Knee Clinic.

After the surgery, you can go home once you regain consciousness from the anaesthesia. Your doctor may advise you to use crutches and wear a crepe bandage to restrict the motion of the graft.

After that, you may be recommended to follow the RICE model and physiotherapy for strength and conditioning. You will start gaining some motion after a few weeks of surgery. Complete recovery may take approximately nine months. But for athletes to restart playing, it may take over a year.
