Dr. Aditya Sai is a gemstone. My father-in-law had a tendon injury while climbing stairs in my hometown, Odisha, and the doctor there made us nervous like anything; he asked us to rush to Bhubaneswar or Visakhapatnam immediately and get the surgery done within 7 days. Thank God, I live in Mumbai and learned about Dr. Aditya Sai through a mutual friend, and I took an appointment. Next morning, my father-in-law flew from Odisha to Mumbai, and we met Dr. Aditya Sai. Believe me, he made us so comfortable, and first he made us understand the exact situation, the need for an MRI, and in what scenarios surgery is required, etc. After all the diagnoses, he prescribed special footwear for my father-in-law for 6 weeks. Today, as I write this post, without surgery, my father-in-law is absolutely perfect and is about to go to the physiotherapists for recovery. Thank you, Dr. Aditya Sai. 🙏

I went to Dr. Aditya Sai after an acident. He showed remarkable depth of knowledge, skill, and awareness, during the process of advising for surgery and off course - also during the surgery. This helped me recover quite well. His communication and willingness to talk to other treating doctors was great and particularly helpful in mitigating risks associated with the surgery and also helped during the course of my recovery. Most of all, he comes across as a warm and sensitive doctor, which makes him among the better Doctors that I've ever met.

    Preparing for Sports Injury Treatment

The sports injury specialist will recommend a few diagnostic tests to check the type of injury present and prepare a treatment plan accordingly. The preparatory diagnostic tests include the following:

    • Physical examination: The doctor will physically examine the area and possibly test how the injured area is moving.
    • Medical history: The doctor will inquire about how to injury occurred, what the patient did after the injury, the symptoms of the patient, and the general medical history of the patient.
    • Imaging tests: Tests like X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRI scans may be recommended to obtain clear images of the structures inside the body. This enables the doctor to diagnose and treat a particular sports injury properly.

    • The doctor may recommend stopping the intake of certain medications, like blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medicines, a few days before surgical treatment.
    • If the treatment requires surgery, the doctor may recommend fasting for a couple of hours before surgery.
    • Arrange for someone to take you home after the treatment.
    • Arrange for some help at home to help you during your post-treatment recovery period.

    Sports Injury Treatment Options

The type of treatment performed for sports injury will vary depending on the type and severity of injury present. The different sports injury treatment options include the following:

    Treatment for Minor Sports Injury

If the sports injury is minor and does not show any major symptoms, the RICE method is used for treatment at home. This method usually helps in healing the injury involves:

    • Rest
    • Ice
    • Compression
    • Elevation

The RICE method provides the best results when performed within 24 to 36 hours following an injury. It helps in reducing pain and swelling after the injury.

    Major Sports Injury Treatments

Serious sports injuries can be treated based on the injury type and severity using the following treatment options:

    • Immobilization using a cast, splint, sling, crutches, or other assisted medical devices
    • Anti-inflammatory medications
    • Injections for reducing pain and swelling
    • Surgery for correction of fractures, cartilage or tendon tears, or to repair a ligament
    • Physiotherapy or rehabilitation to improve the strength and mobility of the injured body parts

    • Physiotherapy helps regain your muscle strength and restore the function of the injured area. Additionally, physiotherapy exercises will help reduce the risk of developing similar injuries in the future.
    • Start with gentle exercises and gradually increase the range of motion in the treated area.
    • Strengthening and stretching exercises can be increased as the pain decreases and movement in the treated area improves.
    • Avoid strenuous exercises and putting any pressure on the treated area till healing is complete.
    • The doctor and physiotherapist will let you know when you can resume your normal sporting activities.

It is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries caused by sports and exercises. Most sports teams hire their team physicians for care. However, since the late 20th-century, sports medicine has developed in a distinct field of medicine. In some countries, sports medicine is considered a speciality (similar to other specialities like neuro), and in some, it is a specialised area but not a speciality option.

You can even consult with a sports injury specialist in Mumbai to know in detail about the prevention of injuries. It is becoming a competitive field of medicine, and Dr. Aditya Sai, one of the top doctors, can help you understand more.

A typical treatment regimen for sport-related injuries is the RICE method. It represents Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

The technique is effective for mild injuries. It works the best if you employ the RICE method within 24-36 hours after the injury. It avoids additional pain, decreases swelling and bruising in the early time of an injury. If you feel that the injury is severe or it looks that way, do seek medical help. Emergency care is needed if the injured joint shows any of the following-

    • Excess swelling and pain
    • Lumps, bumps or other visible deformities.
    • Audible popping or crunching sound when you use the joint.
    • Inability to put weight on the joint
    • Instability
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Dizziness
    • Fever

Physical therapy becomes necessary in case of severe injuries. You should see a doctor if the injury doesn’t get better in two weeks.

Keep the following things in mind while choosing a specialist for sports injuries-

    • Referrals Help
You can ask your physician for a list of recommended sport medicine specialists. Your family, friends and other healthcare providers can help with suggestions as well. Take out some time to check their credentials and expertise. Shortlist the ones you feel are right, then call up their office for a consultation visit. Finally, meet and consult with the doctor.
    • Research The Doctor’s Credentials
When selecting a sports specialist doctor, a significant factor is a board certification that needs to be considered. It represents that the doctor has the required training, talent and experience to provide care. In addition, check whether the doctor has any history of malpractice or disciplinary actions.
    • Consider The Expertise
While facing sports-related health problems, experience matters a lot. The results are likely to be better if the doctor has enough expertise in dealing with the problem or injury. Ask the staff how many patients they have treated for the same issue before.
    • Gender Consideration
A sports injury can involve personal discussion. Therefore it is necessary that you feel comfortable with your sports injury doctor. Your gender consideration is also vital in sports medicine. With the developments, sports medicine specialists are getting skilled in treating men and women differently.
    • Check Hospital Quality
Where your doctor works matters, as it will be your hospital as well. Thus, you need to check their quality of care, cleanliness, ambulatory surgical services where the doctor provides care, etc. Patients at top-rated hospitals report lesser complications and better survival rates, so hospital quality is vital.
    • Patient Reviews
You can get a direct insight into how doctors behave and operate their practice by reading what other patients think of them. When people write a review, they consider their experience with appointment schedules, waiting periods, environment, location and staff behaviour.
    • Know Insurance Coverage
It is practical when it comes to insurance. If you want to get the most out of it and spend as little as possible from your pocket, you may need to choose a specific doctor or hospital that accepts your insurance. Credentials, expertise, results, quality are still necessary to check even if they accept your plan.
